Hotels in Helsinki: prices, timing and areas
Helsinki is a Baltic capital where hotel prices swing hard with the season. Summer is short and bright, with very long days, so June draws the crowds and pushes rates up, while March is one of the cheapest months of the year. Guests stay just two nights on average, usually in the centre, from where a tram or ferry reaches Suomenlinna fortress and the Kiasma museum easily. This list has 908 properties, from a hostel bed to five stars on the waterfront. Below is what really drives the price of a stay in Helsinki: the month, the day of the week and the district.
When to book a stay in Helsinki for less
Helsinki is cheapest in early spring. March is usually the bottom of the market, about 35 percent below the yearly average, as tourist traffic eases after the holiday peak. June is the priciest, at the height of the short Nordic summer, when rates rise by roughly a seventh against the rest of the year, and the August festivals near the Pasila arena add to it. The arrival day matters too: the weekend, especially Friday and Saturday, comes out cheaper, while the start of the week, Monday and Tuesday, is the most expensive. For a regular trip it pays to book at least three weeks ahead, as rooms in the centre fill up fast close to the date.
What a stay costs by property type
Helsinki has a fairly wide price range, so a hostel bed and five stars on the waterfront are clearly worlds apart. The cheapest sleep is in hostels and one- and two-star places; you pay the most for five stars in the very centre. Below are indicative nightly rates.
| Property type | Indicative price per night (from) |
| Hostel bed | from approx. EUR 32 |
| One or two-star hotel | from approx. EUR 45 |
| Three-star hotel | from approx. EUR 55 |
| Four-star hotel | from approx. EUR 60 |
| Five-star hotel | from approx. EUR 175 |
Indicative rates for a double room, outside the June peak. In Helsinki the same hotel can cost a lot more midweek than on a Saturday, so check the real price for your dates in the search above.
Where a stay is cheaper and where it costs more
Most people look for a room in the centre, in Downtown and around Helsinki City Centre, close to the Central Station, the shops and the ferry piers. It is convenient but not the cheapest area. The priciest is Kluuvi, in the very heart of the city, where rooms average well above the city figure. It is cheaper further out: Suurmetsä on the edge has the lowest rates, along with quieter districts such as Alppiharju, Haaga and the area around the Pasila arena. Below are average nightly prices in a few districts.
| District | Average price per night |
| Suurmetsä (cheapest) | approx. EUR 45 |
| Alppiharju | approx. EUR 110 |
| Pasila | approx. EUR 135 |
| Katajanokka | approx. EUR 150 |
| Kluuvi (priciest) | approx. EUR 200 |
Indicative prices for a double room. Helsinki has an efficient network of metro, trams and buses, so a stay in a cheaper district further out is still convenient.
Which stay in Helsinki suits whom
- First time in Helsinki. The centre is the easiest base, in Kluuvi or Helsinki City Centre, close to the Central Station. From here it is a walk to Kiasma and a ferry to Suomenlinna fortress.
- For families. Family rooms are the most popular room type in the city. A handy base in a quieter district, close to the Linnanmäki amusement park.
- For couples. Intimate hotels on the waterfront in Katajanokka or in the centre. In the evening it is a short walk along the harbour and to the restaurants.
- With breakfast. Many hotels in the centre include a buffet in the rate, which helps you set off early for sightseeing. Handy on a short, two-night stay.
- Near the airport. Hotels around Helsinki-Vantaa suit an early flight, and the train and bus run quickly into the centre.
